Viacom commissioned a new comic series, two new live-action films, and new animated series. In 2009, the franchise was purchased by Viacom, now Paramount Global. Three live-action films were released the first became the highest-grossing independent film up to that point. In some European regions, the word "ninja" in the name was replaced with "hero" for its violent connotations. It follows Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, four anthropomorphic turtle brothers trained in ninjutsu who fight evil in New York City.
